Math News

Greetings from the Math Department.  Congratulations to the following students for their top three rankings for our school in the Annual American Mathematics Competition given in early February - 9th-10th grades:  1st place - Field Rogers; 2nd place - Martin Chandler; 3rd place - Kiavanni Dolan.  11th-12th grades:  1st place - Tucker Williams; 2nd place - Nicholas Nemeth; 3rd place - Charlotte Reber.  Thanks to all the fine math students who participated in this very challenging exam.
The Vermont State Math Coalition Challenge has been completed (4 rounds of eight questions on each round).  Field Rogers and Martin Chandler participated in all four rounds.  Congratulations to them and all who participated in one or more rounds of the challenge.  Field qualified for the 2008-2009 Talent Search Competition Team for Vermont.  She is one of fifteen students invited to participate in the ARML Competition at Penn State University on May 29th and 30th.  Well done, Field!
The results of the Annual UVM Prize Math Exam are now available.  Three students are in the top 10% for this state-wide exam.  Field Rogers, Nick Nemeth and Georgia Roy each earned a score to be acknowledged in the top group.  Thank you for the impressive effort on this extremely challenging two-hour exam created by the math professors at UVM.
Mr. Ryan Brier is enjoying his student teaching experience with Mrs. Vance and Mr. LaBree.  He will be concluding his practicum in mid May.  Thanks for joining our staff, Mr. Brier. Best wishes to all for a productive, fourth quarter.  Think Spring!

Social Studies News
The social studies department was excited to send student delegates with a department member and our administrator to the capital in Montpelier this past March.  Students of our United States History course met with Lamoille county representatives, observed the Transportation committee engage in discussions and toured the legislative chambers.  These students, led by Mitch Tillotson and Susan Bernath, included Ashley Dennis, Brittany Newland, Dorigen Martin, and Danika Barry.  In May or June, these students will lead their peers in creation and presentation of mock legislation for mock legislative committee meetings.  Stay tuned for more updates.

Art News

Another busy semester in the Art department comes to an end.  We are so proud of our students’ abilities to create and grow as artists, so please take a tour of our ever-changing displays!

Club of the Arts is sponsoring a trip to Montreal on May 26th.  We will be visiting the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Botanical Gardens, and getting the cosmopolitan city vibe. Students on this trip will need to bring in 29$, a copy of their passport or birth certificate, and a photo ID for the border.
Mark your calendars! Art Shines 2009, the fourth annual LNSU District Art Show will run from May 5-8 at the Johnson Studio Center. The opening reception will be May 5 from 5-7 pm.  Come celebrate all of our students’ hard work with us!

FACS

FACS students have been involved in two community service projects this semester.  At Christmas time they made dog biscuits to donate to local animal shelters as many people are unfortunately giving up their pets due to tight economic times.  They also participated in the "Valentines for Vets" program which involves making hand made cards to send to the Vermont Veterans Home and hospital.  Thanks for the worthwhile projects!
